Music Video Release Strategy

An important component of your marketing strategy is the plan behind your music video release. Music videos are one of the many parts of the entire cycle for your album. As an artist, you must determine the purpose of your music video:

1. Build up hype for an upcoming album

2. Bring more attention to an already established song of yours

Here are 4 tactics to help you plan out your future music video:

1) Plan out your release schedule

- When you’re in the makes of a new album, it is imperative to construct a posting schedule to help you promote your music. When developing a content strategy, ask yourself if you want to drop a new music video before or after your album release? This is the first step to help you determine how your music video can help you optimize your music’s reach.

2) Allocate time for post-production

- Editing is a significant component when it comes to producing a video – whether it’s a full-blown production or recorded home video – it takes time to p-e-r-f-e-c-t. You will want to leave yourself some leeway to edit your video and make it come to life. For example, an artist’s vision may change during production, so you will want to have enough “cushion” time to implement changes if needed.

3) Be your own hype man

- You need to build up hype to create anticipation amongst your fans. Be sure to promote your upcoming music video a few days or weeks ahead of time. You can do this by releasing some type of “trailer” to share on your socials. You can also countdown the days until your release so your fans are constantly reminded when to tune in. This is a good tactic because you will want to optimize your video’s views as soon as it goes live – the more views your video gets, the better it will get picked up by YouTube’s algorithm.

4) Get creative!

- Post content other than the video itself to help create hype for your video. Post other forms of content such as behind the scenes (BTS) photos or video snippets on set to tease your audience and let your fans know you’re working on something for them.

Most importantly, you should have your video completed (or close to it) before announcing its release date. This will help you avoid potentially having to postpone its release and disappointing your fans. Keep in mind that music videos are supposed to depict the story behind your lyrics. It helps you bring your music to life and further content with your fans – have fun and get creative!
