Music Marketing 101: Electronic Press Kit

Updated: Dec 5, 2019

How to Create an Electronic Press Kit (EPK):

As an artist, you want to get your brand in front of many eyes as possible. Getting your music in front of ONE right person is all it takes. It is imperative to utilize digital tools to your advantage to maximize your reach and get your music out there.

EPK is a must have for any artist seeking exposure and publicity. It is is a business-facing promotional package you share when pitching yourself to any business partners – such as editors, bloggers, talent buyers, labels, concert promoters, and more. Hence, it’s not meant for fans and should be placed separately from your personal website.

Your EPK is the central hub for all of your assets that media partners can easily access. Having all your assets housed in one location will make the writer’s job easier, and more inclined to work with you in the future! It should include the following assets:

• Your Bio

It is a brief overview of who you are – it describes where you are from, your musical genre/style, and your accomplishments. Following a social proof template is a good way to get started.

• Your Photo(s)

Publish any press photos you would like to be shared – this will avoid the hassle of having to go back-and-forth over photo approvals with the writer. Keep in mind to share your best-quality photos via a Google Drive or Dropbox link for easy accessibility. Include photo credit info if necessary.

• Your Accomplishments

Include your streaming stats, artist collaborations, awards, etc. that you are proud of.

• Links to Your Music

Provide links to your profile on all popular streaming services such as Spotify, Apple Music, Google Play, etc.

• Links to Your Social Media Profiles/Website

Provide links to all your social media channels like Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, as well as your personal website. Social media is an excellent way to build your fan-base, make real connections, and promote your music.

• Press Quotes

Share “snippets” of any positive quotes you have been featured in somewhere in the media (digital or print).

• Any Imperative/Timely Information

If you’re releasing a new EP or album, this is where you will want to build hype for your future work.

Once you perfect your EPK, it’s time to pitch yourself to potential press partners. Once a writer is convinced, they will go to your EPK to learn more information, and this is where they will GET SOLD!

Note: You will want to avoid sending a Press Kit in PDF format. Although PDF versions were traditional methods of sharing Press Kits, times have changed. Here’s some reason why:

- PDFs are not mobile-friendly

- Email attachments get sent to spam

- Hard to update

- You can’t attach links

EPK is just one of the many resources you should use when it comes to Music Marketing. As I learn more about everything I need to know about Music Marketing, so will you! Be sure to follow me to stay up-to-date with all things Music related!
